For most local businesses, a handful of well-maintained listings is enough: Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, the main local directories and the key portals of your industry. Consistent details everywhere are what counts. In our study, directories, rankings and lists played a role mainly for ChatGPT and Perplexity.
What are business directories still good for?
The phone book used to be the way to find a tradesperson. Today, directories mainly do three jobs. They bring direct enquiries from people who search there. They confirm to search engines that your business exists at this address. And they are public sources that AI assistants with web search can draw on.
Our study of AI recommendations for web agencies shows this too: for ChatGPT, almost one in three cited sources came from a directory, ranking or list, and for Perplexity about one in seven. Gemini, by contrast, almost always pointed directly to the agencies’ own websites. The most cited source in the entire study was an agency directory. A listing alone does not lead to a recommendation, but it is one of the sources from which a picture of your business is assembled.
Which listings really matter?
For most local businesses, this order is worthwhile. Costs can change, so check the current terms before listing.
| Directory | What for | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Google Search and Google Maps | Free, with location verification |
| Bing Places | Bing, Microsoft services and Copilot | Free, can import data from Google |
| Apple Business Connect | Apple Maps and Siri | Free |
| National directories, in Germany for example Das Örtliche, Gelbe Seiten and 11880 | Classic phone and business directories | Basic listing usually free, extra packages paid |
| Industry portals | Search within an industry | For example doctor searches, lawyer or tax advisor directories |
For regulated professions, the official directories are particularly important. More on this in the guides for doctors, law firms and tax advisors.

The same details everywhere: the most important point
A listing only helps if it is correct. Name, address, phone number and opening hours should be written the same way everywhere, down to details such as “Street” or “St.”. In SEO this is called NAP consistency, for name, address, phone.
Contradictions arise easily: after a move, a new phone number, a name change or because a portal has imported data from old sources. Keep a simple list recording every listing with its login and the date you last checked it. Review the most important listings twice a year.
On your own website, the same details belong in the legal notice, on the contact page and in the structured data. The guide to entity SEO describes how search engines and AI assistants recognise your business as one clear entity.
Beware of listing offers and invoices
Few topics attract as many dubious offers as directory listings. Typical examples are forms that look like an invoice or a free data update but contain an expensive multi-year contract in the small print. Packages with “hundreds of listings” in unknown directories rarely achieve anything either.
- Do not sign anything just because it looks like an invoice. Check whether you even know the provider.
- Read the term and price before you “confirm” data.
- A listing in a directory without real users is worthless, even if it is free.
Maintain a few listings thoroughly rather than creating many half-heartedly.
What belongs in a good listing
A listing is more than a name and a phone number. If you want to optimise your Google Business Profile or improve a directory listing, start with these details:
- A fitting primary category and a few matching secondary categories
- A short description of what you do, for whom and in which area
- Current opening hours, including public holidays
- A link to the matching page on your website, not just the home page
- Real photos of premises, team or work
Write the description the way you would introduce yourself to a customer. A factual, specific description helps people and machines alike. The guide to review platforms explains how reviews on these portals work.
Which sources do AI assistants use for your industry?
Which directories really count for you depends on your industry and location. You can check: ask an AI assistant with web search a recommendation question, such as “Which electrician in [city] would you recommend?”, and look at the cited sources. If certain portals keep appearing, you should be listed there with correct details.
The free AI prompt generator creates suitable questions for your industry. Nalqerio documents such answers with the cited sources through the APIs of ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Personal chats are not measured, and a recommendation is not guaranteed. The measurement guide has more.
If you want to try this for your business, Nalqerio offers a free 14-day trial if you have not used it before: one project, three active questions and one complete AI measurement round in total, without a card and without an automatic subscription. The pricing page describes the plans.
Frequently asked questions
How many directory listings does a local business need?
Usually a handful: Google, Bing, Apple, the main national directories and the key portals of your industry. Correct details everywhere matter more than the number of listings.
Do directory listings provide backlinks for SEO?
A few, and they usually have only limited influence on rankings. Their value lies more in customers finding you there and in your business being described the same way in several places.
Do directories help get recommended by ChatGPT?
They can contribute, because AI assistants with web search draw on public sources. In our study, directories and lists played a role mainly for ChatGPT and Perplexity. There is no guarantee.
