SEO for tax advisors: The right clients instead of random enquiries

Many tax firms have plenty of work, but not always the right kind. A firm focused on doctors and freelancers does not want enquiries for a one-off personal tax return. A good website makes sure the right clients get in touch and the others do not call in the first place.

What you will take away

SEO for tax advisors works best through clear target groups: founders, freelancers, trade businesses, limited companies or private individuals. Each target group gets a page that answers its questions. Add a correct entry in the official directory, a maintained Google profile and factual copy within German professional rules. Our own sample shows how rarely AI assistants name a specific firm.

Who do you most like working for?

“Tax advice for private individuals and businesses” describes almost every firm. If you want to win the right clients, say who you are particularly good for. That can be industries, legal forms or life situations.

The examples are patterns. Search Console shows which queries reach your website. The guide to search intent helps you classify them.

What belongs on a target group page?

A good target group page reads like a first conversation. It shows that you know the typical questions of these clients and explains how working together works.

  • Which topics do you handle for this group, for example bookkeeping, annual accounts or advice when starting a business?
  • How do you work together: digitally, in person or a mix?
  • Which documents does the firm need, and how often?
  • How are fees calculated? In Germany, a reference to the statutory fee regulation and typical factors builds trust.
  • Are you accepting new clients, and how does someone book a first meeting?

Guides on deadlines or changes need a date. Tax law changes every year, and an outdated text can mislead readers. The guide to E-E-A-T describes how to make expertise verifiable.

Advertising for tax advisors in Germany

For tax advisors in Germany, section 57a of the Tax Advisory Act (StBerG) applies: advertising is permitted as long as it provides factual information about professional activities in form and content and is not aimed at obtaining a mandate in an individual case. The professional code of the Federal Chamber of Tax Advisors adds detail.

For your website, this means informing, explaining and putting things in context. Name focus areas you can back up, and avoid guarantees such as “maximum tax savings”. Factual copy is legally safer and more convincing for clients. Outside Germany, your local rules apply. This section is general guidance, not legal advice.

Tax advisor directory, Google profile and more

The official tax advisor directory of the German chambers of tax advisors is the authoritative source for appointed tax advisors. Check that your details there are current. In the Google Business Profile, the right category, current opening hours and a booking link help. Follow the guidelines for representing your business.

What matters is that firm name, address, phone number and focus areas match everywhere. That helps clients and makes it easier for search engines and AI assistants to identify your firm. The guide to business directories covers further listings.

A real sample: 0 out of 6 answers

Our own sample from 16 October 2026 shows how rarely AI assistants name a particular firm. Through their APIs, we asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity two questions in German: “Which tax advisor in Kiel would you recommend?” and “I’m looking for a tax advisor in Kiel for my small company. Who would you recommend?”

The Kiel firm we checked did not appear in any of the six answers. Instead, four other firms were named most often, two of them three times each. Gemini used web search via Perplexity. A single sample is no verdict on a firm, and AI answers vary. But it shows that visibility in AI answers cannot be taken for granted, even for established firms.

Check your own situation with several questions from a client’s point of view, for example using the free AI prompt generator. Nalqerio documents such API answers with sources, but does not measure personal chats or guarantee a recommendation. The methodology has the details.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO worth it for a tax firm with a full calendar?

Yes, if you want to steer the kind of mandates you get. Clear target group pages attract suitable enquiries and make it clear whom you do not serve. That saves time on the phone.

Should I publish prices on my website?

A rough framework and the factors that affect cost help prospective clients. In Germany, tax advisors charge under a statutory fee regulation, so fixed prices often only make sense for clearly defined services.

Why doesn’t ChatGPT mention my firm?

There can be many reasons, such as few public sources, contradictory details or simply the wording of the question. Check several questions and compare which sources the assistants cite.
