Local SEO: How Customers in Your Area Find Your Business

Anyone looking for a tradesperson, a practice or a law firm nearby usually chooses between the first three names they see: on Google Maps, in the search results or in an AI answer. Local SEO makes sure your business appears where your customers actually search.

What you will take away

Local SEO covers everything that makes your business visible for searches with a location. The key building blocks are a complete Google Business Profile, clear details on your website, genuine reviews and consistent directory listings. AI assistants use the same information when they recommend businesses in a town.

What is local SEO?

Local SEO means making a business findable for searches with a location, such as “electrician Manchester”, “accountant near me” or “physiotherapy Camden”. For such searches Google usually shows a map with three listings, with the regular results below. A third place is increasingly added: the answer of an AI assistant.

For small businesses this is good news. You do not compete against national brands, but against the competitors in your area. With solid foundations you can achieve a lot there.

How Google ranks local results

In its tips to improve local ranking, Google names three factors:

The three factors according to Google
FactorMeaningWhat you can do
RelevanceDoes your listing match the search?Right category, complete services, clear description
DistanceHow close is your business to the searcher?Give the correct address or service area
ProminenceHow well known is your business?Reviews, mentions, links and a good website

You cannot change distance. Relevance and prominence you can, and that is what the next sections are about.

The Google Business Profile as the foundation

For the map view, the Google Business Profile is decisive. Choose the right primary category, list all services, keep opening hours current and upload real photos. Follow the guidelines for representing your business, for example by using your business name without extra keywords.

A detailed step-by-step guide is available in optimise your Google Business Profile.

Your website: make location and service unmistakable

Your website should make immediately clear to people and search engines what you offer where. That includes:

  • name, address and phone number clearly visible, ideally in the footer of every page
  • a dedicated page for each important service, with the location in the title, such as “Bathroom renovation in Leeds”
  • a clear description of your service area instead of long lists of place names
  • structured data for local businesses following Google’s documentation

Avoid dozens of near-identical pages for every neighbouring town. Such pages do not help customers and are treated as low quality. One good page per service is better, plus one page per location if you really have several. How to build service pages is shown in SEO for tradespeople.

Reviews, directories and mentions

Prominence grows where others talk about you. For small businesses there are three main areas:

  • Reviews: regularly and honestly ask for reviews. How to do this within the rules is explained in how to get Google reviews.
  • Directories: a few relevant listings with exactly the same details as your website. Which ones are worth it is covered in business directories.
  • Mentions: local press, associations, chambers, partner businesses. Every credible mention makes your business better known.

Local SEO and AI answers

When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity for a business in their town, these systems draw on publicly available information: websites, business profiles, directories and review platforms. Solid local SEO is therefore also the best basis for AI recommendations.

Your 30-day local SEO plan

You do not have to do everything at once. A realistic plan for one month:

  1. Week 1: complete your Google Business Profile and check the category.
  2. Week 2: align name, address and phone number on your website and in the main directories.
  3. Week 3: improve your most important service page with a clear location.
  4. Week 4: ask ten happy customers for a review and repeat the AI check.

If you want to follow progress over weeks, including Gemini and Perplexity, you can try Nalqerio free for 14 days if you have not used the trial before. No credit card needed; more on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

How long does local SEO take to work?

Changes to your business profile often show within a few days. Better positions from new reviews and content usually develop over several weeks to months. Nobody can guarantee a fixed position.

Do I need an agency for local SEO?

Not necessarily. You can handle the basics such as your profile, consistent details and reviews yourself. An agency is mainly worth it for extensive website work or strong competition.

Does local SEO help with ChatGPT too?

Yes, indirectly. AI assistants use the same public information as search engines. Consistent details, a maintained profile and good reviews increase the chance of being named in recommendations, but do not guarantee it.
