Google AI Mode: What It Does and What It Changes for Businesses

Google Search now offers a second way to search: AI Mode. Instead of ten blue links you get a detailed answer, can ask follow-up questions and click through to sources. This guide explains how AI Mode works, how to open or avoid it and what it means for your business’s visibility.

What you will take away

AI Mode is a separate area of Google Search that answers complex questions as a conversation. Google splits a question into many sub-searches and builds an answer with links from matching pages. There are no special rules for businesses: what counts is being indexed, describing your services clearly and appearing in trusted sources. Visibility can only be measured with fixed customer questions and repeated samples.

What is Google AI Mode?

AI Mode is a separate search area inside Google Search. You ask a question in full sentences, get a detailed answer and can follow up directly without starting a new search. Links to the pages Google relies on appear below and beside the answer.

After launching in the US, Google expanded AI Mode in October 2025 to more than 35 new languages and over 40 new countries and territories, as announced on the Google blog. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland it has been available since 8 October 2025. AI Mode understands photos and voice input as well as text.

One point matters for understanding it: AI Mode does not replace normal search. It is an extra tab that people open on purpose. The familiar results page with links remains the default, and that is where the shorter AI Overviews sometimes appear.

How an AI Mode answer is created

An answer is built from more than one search. In its documentation “AI features and your website”, Google describes a technique called query fan-out: the question is split into several related sub-questions, each is searched, and the answer is assembled from the results.

Simplified process based on Google Search Central. Our own explanatory graphic, no measurement data.

An example: for “Which painter in Hamburg can do a facade at short notice?”, Google does not only search for that exact wording. It also checks sub-questions such as “facade painting Hamburg”, “painter Hamburg short notice” or “painter Hamburg reviews”. That is why pages can appear in the answer that do not rank on page one for the original question.

According to Google, AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so the same question can produce different answers and links in each. How to prepare your content for such sub-questions is covered in our guide to query fan-out.

How to open, use or avoid AI Mode

There is nothing to set up. This is how you open AI Mode:

  1. On a computer: search on Google and choose the “AI Mode” tab above the results.
  2. On a phone: in the Google app or a mobile browser, AI Mode also appears as its own tab or as a button below the search box.
  3. Follow-up questions: an input field below the answer lets you keep asking. The conversation keeps its context until you start a new search.

AI Mode is not showing? Google rolls out features gradually. Check language and region in your search settings, update the Google app and sign in. Some extra features reach Europe later than the US.

Turn it off? There is no need for a permanent switch, because AI Mode only opens when you choose it. If you also want to skip the short AI Overviews on the normal results page, use the “Web” filter below the search box. It shows only the classic links.

AI Mode, AI Overview and Gemini compared

The three are often confused because Google’s Gemini models power all of them. For users and businesses they differ clearly:

Why Gemini as an assistant can name different businesses than Google Search is explained in our guide to Gemini SEO. For an overview of all AI search services, see our AI search engine comparison.

What AI Mode changes for businesses

AI Mode moves part of the research into the answer. Someone who used to open five websites to compare providers now gets a pre-sorted shortlist. That has three consequences for businesses:

  • Fewer but more targeted clicks. SISTRIX shows for the related AI Overviews how strongly AI answers reduce clicks: in Germany the click-through rate for position 1 drops from about 27 to 11 percent when an AI Overview appears (SISTRIX study). Comparably robust figures for AI Mode do not exist yet.
  • The shortlist decides. If you are not named in the answer, many users never consider you.
  • More sources count. Because Google combines many sub-searches, reviews, directories, articles and your business profile shape the picture alongside your website.
Good to know: According to Google, visits from AI features are counted under “Web” in the Search Console performance report. There is no separate AI Mode filter, so your click numbers do not tell you whether you are named in the answers.

How your business gets named in AI Mode

Google stresses that AI Mode has no special technical requirements: no special files, no extra markup. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Search. Building on that, these steps help most:

  1. Answer customer questions. Write one page per service that directly answers the typical questions: what exactly, for whom, where, on what terms? Templates are in our FAQ guide for SEO and GEO.
  2. Make each section understandable on its own. Sub-searches often pick out single sections. Clear subheadings and complete sentences help, see content chunking.
  3. Keep your business profile up to date. For local questions Google uses your Business Profile details. The guide is at Google Business Profile.
  4. Use structured data that matches the visible text. It is not required but makes details unambiguous. More in our schema markup guide.
  5. Appear in sources Google already uses. Review platforms, trade directories and press coverage support your claims from the outside.
Myth: “AI Mode needs an llms.txt file.”

Google says explicitly that no AI text files are needed. An llms.txt may be useful for other systems, but according to Google it plays no role in AI Mode.

Myth: “Ranking first means being named automatically.”

No. Because of the sub-searches, a page at position 8 can be named while the one at position 1 is not. Good rankings help but are no guarantee.

Fact: “Images and videos count.”

Google recommends high-quality images and videos to support the text. AI Mode also understands photos as input.

Fact: “nosnippet keeps content out.”

Control works through familiar directives such as nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex. Using them also costs you visibility.

How to check your visibility in AI Mode

Because Search Console has no separate filter, the only option is a direct check with fixed customer questions. To keep it comparable:

  • Choose 5 to 10 questions real customers would ask, without your company name.
  • Ask them in AI Mode with the same settings (language, region, device) and note whether you are named, who is named instead and which sources are linked.
  • Repeat the check at the same interval. In our web agency study, the same AI named only about a third of the agencies again one week later, so single tests say little.

A detailed template is in our guide to measuring AI visibility. For context: Nalqerio automatically measures the AI Overview in normal Google Search plus ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, not AI Mode itself. The free AI check shows in about a minute whether ChatGPT already names your business.
