AI search engines and assistants combine retrieval, answers and dialogue in different ways. Identify the specific product and mode, then compare the same customer questions and available sources. A provider name alone does not describe a measurement.
What is an AI search engine, and what is an assistant?
An AI search engine can retrieve information and compose an answer from it. An assistant may also perform tasks, handle files or respond without a current web search. These categories overlap. A useful comparison records which mode actually handled the question.
A link does not automatically substantiate an entire answer. Check the specific claim it supports and the documentβs currency. The grounding guide explains how to read a source alongside an assertion.
The overview below compares documented capabilities. It is not an original performance test or a ranking of the βbestβ AI. Editorial review date: 16 October 2026. Interfaces and availability may change; the linked provider documentation is the starting point.
Which AI search engines are available? Five offerings compared
| Offering / interface | What it is | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT with web search | Web search inside an assistant; answers may include source links. | Was search active? Which source supports the claim? OpenAI documentation |
| Perplexity | Answer-oriented web research with linked sources. | Search mode and the evidence actually used. Provider description |
| Google AI Overviews / AI Mode | AI features within Google Search. | Keep the specific Search interface separate from Gemini. Google Search Central |
| Copilot Search in Bing | Web search combined with summarised answers and sources. | Do not equate this Bing experience with other Copilot products. Bing documentation |
| Gemini Apps | An assistant that may provide sources or related links, but does not do so for every answer. | Do not replace absent sources with guessed evidence. Gemini help |
Free access can help with a first manual inspection, but does not describe the full feature set. Check current provider limits. This table makes no promise about prices, unrestricted use or the availability of every mode in every country.

Which systems matter for your business?
Begin with customer questions rather than a long list of providers. For a complex product, prerequisites and sources matter. A local service adds location. A general knowledge question has different requirements from a specific supplier search.
Choose two or three interfaces you can inspect consistently. If reliable audience usage data is unavailable, describe the selection as a pilot. Do not infer market share from it. The local AI visibility guide covers regional questions; ChatGPT Shopping addresses the separate product-discovery case.
Our study of AI recommendations for web agencies offers a bounded research example. Its sample does not establish a universal result for all industries or for your own brand.
Run a small comparison that someone else can understand
Write three questions before viewing the first answer: an open selection question, one about an important prerequisite and one containing your brand. Use the same wording, language and market for the first pass. Record an existing conversation context or deliberately start a new conversation.
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Question and context | Exact wording, language, country and location where relevant |
| Product and mode | Interface, search mode, sign-in state and time |
| Brand mention | Named brand and the specific accompanying claim |
| Source | URL, supported assertion and review date |
| Unknowns | Missing evidence, unclear freshness or different context |
Open the sources yourself. Keep the decisive statement and its evidence, not just a score. Repeat an observation later under documented conditions if you need to assess change. A single answer may prompt an investigation; it does not establish a trend.
How does this differ from a GEO tool measurement?
A manual observation in a search interface and an automated API sample are different datasets. They can complement each other, but should not be presented as identical observations. Settings, models, conversation context and available tools may differ.
Nalqerio documents selected authorised API responses and available sources. It does not read personal ChatGPT conversations or directly measure Google AI Overviews or Microsoft Copilot. A Gemini API answer is not a screenshot of the Gemini app either. The methodology explains the actual scope.
If you are selecting a measurement tool, continue to the GEO tool comparison guide. This article compares search offerings and review methods. The two decisions are related but serve different tasks.
What should you do with a missing or incorrect mention?
Check the finding first. Is the answer selecting suppliers at all? Does the requested service fit your offer? Does a source describe outdated terms? A missing brand in an irrelevant question is not a useful optimisation task.
If a specific fact is missing, find the responsible page and add a verifiable statement. The AI hallucination guide helps investigate incorrect descriptions. For an absent mention, why your business is not mentioned walks through possible explanations.
Record the edit and its date. Later, assess the same question under reasonably comparable conditions and keep actual search clicks or enquiries separately. Better source information is an actionable step; it does not guarantee an AI recommendation.
Frequently asked questions
Which AI search engine is best?
That depends on the task. Evidence-based research needs relevant, verifiable sources; a dialogue may place more emphasis on follow-up context. A small comparison using your own consistent questions is more useful than a universal winner.
Are Gemini and Google AI Overviews the same?
No. Gemini Apps and the AI features in Google Search are different interfaces. Record the product and mode for each observation.
Can I compare AI search engines for free?
An initial manual comparison may be possible within the providersβ available free access. Check current conditions and limits. This does not imply free or unlimited access to every feature.
